Our History

1990

Sean Goodwin and Ed Blanar first met in 1990. They became friends based on their shared concerns about the environment, family, values and personal integrity. Both were environmentally conscious, Sean Goodwin with a degree in Horticulture, had always been self-employed and “field oriented”. Ed Blanar had degrees in Earth Science and Engineering and having experience with corporate structure is soundly “office oriented”. Together, Sean and Ed would be able to successfully start their own venture. They concluded that since laws were being enacted to support environmental restoration, it would be a thriving emerging issue, and to be able to work in a field that they both truly enjoyed would be a life-long dream-come-true.

Beginnings 1991 - 2000

1991

Realizing they were intelligent, honest, hard working and could achieve a high potential working together, Enviroscapes, Inc was established on March 23, 1991. From these humble beginnings, Enviroscapes, Inc. would grow to become one of the “Nation's Premier Wetlands Restoration Firms.”

1992

Enviroscapes first clients include: AMAX Realty Development Corp., New Jersey City University (formerly Jersey City State College), Dames & Moore, and Tami-Githens, Inc. Enviroscapes very quickly noticed that many of the landscape specifications produced for native restoration projects lack the optimal grass species and plant material for their specific sites. Many of the specifications were just boiler plate documents created without any consideration for local ecology and climate, and they were mostly doomed for failure. With their backgrounds in horticulture and earth science, they were able to provide insight to clients, environmental consultants and contractors on the merits of different types of grasses and native plants and sound ecological planning.

Enviroscapes quickly established itself as a trusted source for honest assessments of project plans and specifications, and it was able to keep its clients satisfied through honest hard work and constructability reviews as work progressed. The company grew as clients spread the word about Enviroscapes' quality and service.

1995

By 1995 Enviroscapes continued to grow and signed new clients: McLaren Hart, ENSR and OHM Remediation Services Corp. By now a six person company, performing large-scale seeding and landscape activities at hazardous waste sites complemented the ever growing remediation market. With the increasing interest in wetlands preservation, many of Enviroscapes' new projects included wetlands components as well.

1998

Poised for success, Enviroscapes' work load expanded significantly and wetland/stream bank restoration became a new innovative way to improve the environment and to advance our corporate mission. Wetland restoration became Enviroscapes' niche in the environmental field. Enviroscapes background and past experience placed the company in an ideal position to expand and develop. Enviroscapes' client list had grown to include over 100 public and private sector clients on projects ranging from Georgia to Massachusetts.

1999

Enviroscapes developed an excellent reputation as a hands-on contractor with a great work ethic and strong technical and field capabilities. An influx of new personnel, equipment and hard work helped us continue our growth. Enviroscapes began performing prevailing wage work and started considering large public sector projects. Both our private sector and public sector client bases continued to expand.

New Decade: 2000

Enviroscapes won its biggest contracts to date $652,000 in 2000, and we expanded our personnel to 10 year-round employees and another 10-15 employees during the summer. Enviroscapes is an industry leader in wetland and stream bank restoration. The company at this point is well-recognized and has developed an excellent reputation for hard work, honesty and integrity.

2006

Enviroscapes increased its truck fleet and equipment line with tracked skid steers, mini-excavators, a larger tractor and a variety of drill seeder attachments. Our work experience grew to over 600 successfully completed projects.

2007

Enviroscapes gained new clients, we now have solid experience in stream bank restoration, wetlands mitigation, enhancement and restoration and erosion control projects. New and existing clients brought technically and physically challenging new work.

2009

Project estimates continue to be accurate, and we continue to execute projects well. Our clients include some of the best in their respective industries. During the year, Enviroscapes employs about 15 full time employees and another 10 part-time during the summer season. Through the years we have utilized a variety of innovative erosion control techniques, grass mixtures, and construction techniques.

Moving Forward: 2010

Enviroscapes continues to be both a strong field-oriented and technical firm. Collectively, our employees have over 200 years of project experience, and we have completed over 1,100 projects in our 19 year history.

As Enviroscapes celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2011, we will continue to advance our mission, our superior service and our excellent quality in order to restore environmentally impaired sites and to improve our environment.
